How to Get a California Guide License
Step 1: Verify eligibility
Before applying, you must meet the following prerequisites:
- Be at least 16 years old
- Have no violations of any provision of the Fish and Game Code
Step 2: Complete an application
To get your fish and game guide license, complete the application form. Be sure to include the following information:
- Your name, date of birth, age, address and phone number
- A physical description of yourself
- The area(s) you wish to operate
- The type of guiding/packing you wish to engage
- Your qualifying experience
- The type and amount of equipment, vehicles, animals and property you wish to use

Next, submit payment for all fees. California guide license fees vary depending on your residency status:

- Non-Resident: $655

Step 5: Obtain other permits (if applicable)
If you wish to operate with pack or riding animals, you may be required to get a grazing permit. To learn more about areas requiring grazing permits, visit the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Department of Agriculture, or contact the Department of Fish and Wildlife with any questions.
If you wish to guide clients on any lands under U.S. Departments of Interior or Agriculture, you must get a permit from that federal agency.
What If My License is Denied or Revoked?
Your license may be revoked or denied if you violate any provision of the Fish and Game Code or fail to fulfill responsibilities to a client. If this happens, you have the opportunity to be heard by a judge. During the period of revocation and time proceeding the hearing, you are not allowed to act as a guide or assist any guide.

How to Renew Your California Guide License?
California guide licenses are valid from February 1 through January 31 of the following year. You’ll need to file a new application form and surety bond, as well as pay the new registration fee. Or, you can renew your license online through the CDFW website.
Who Is Exempt From Guide Licenses in California?
If you are an employee of a licensed guide in California, you do not need to get a separate guide license. However, you must meet the following conditions:
- You are reported to the carrier of the employer’s workers’ compensation insurance
- You are reported to the state for federal and income tax purposes
- You report all forms, contact information and registration fee to the Department of Fish and Wildlife*

Can I Use a Hunting and Fishing Guide License From Another State to Work in California?
If you are licensed in another state, you are exempt from needing the California guide license as long as you meet the following conditions:
- You plan to use your license only for the purpose of fishing
- The state you are licensed in grants similar reciprocity to licensed non-residents
- You provide a valid guide license upon request
- You engage in business only during approved, multistate, fishing tournament terms
What Are the Guide License Requirements for Boat Operators and Watercraft Guides?
If you wish to operate a boat or other watercraft as a California fish and game guide, you must meet the following conditions:
- Have a valid U.S. Coast Guard license
- Have a U.S. Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection if you carry more than 6 passengers
- Have a fire extinguisher, fuel tank ventilation, personal flotation devices and other safety equipment
