To get your New Jersey HVACR license, follow these five steps.
Step 1: Meet education/work experience requirements
Before applying for a license, complete the required education and work experience. You have several pathways to qualify:
- Apprenticeship: Complete a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship (typically 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and 144 hours of classroom instruction annually for 4-5 years, followed by one year as a journeyperson).
- Bachelor’s Degree: Earn a degree in HVACR or a related field from an accredited institution, plus 1-3 years of journeyperson experience.
- Technical School: Complete an accredited HVACR program, followed by 2 years as an apprentice and 1 year as a journeyperson.
Step 2: Submit license application
Once you’ve met the education and work experience requirements, complete the online application form and submit supporting documents. You’ll also pay a $100 fee.
The Board will review your application and email a letter of approval for you to continue the process. If the Board needs more documentation or information, they will send a letter of deficiency outlining the remaining requirements.
Step 3: Pass state exams
Next, take the state-required business and law exam and trade-specific exam to qualify for your HVACR license. You must pass both with a minimum score of 70%. You can schedule both exams online through Pearson VUE.
Step 4: Purchase a surety bond
Next, purchase a $3,000 surety bond policy from a licensed provider. A New Jersey HVACR bond ensures compliance with state laws and safeguards customers from financial loss if you are non-compliant or perform faulty work.
