Keep reading to learn how to get your Nevada document preparer license in just four steps, plus cost and renewal information.

A Nevada document preparation service provider is a person or business paid to assist clients with documentation for certain legal matters. Under NRS Chapter 240A, these services may include:

  • Completing legal documents, applications or pleadings
  • Translating answers into legal documents
  • Obtaining supporting documents like birth certificates
  • Filing documents with courts or agencies
  • Preparing tax returns

These providers cannot provide legal advice or representation.

To become a registered legal document preparation service provider in Nevada, follow the four steps below.

Step 1: Create a SilverFlume account

You’ll use the SilverFlume business portal to apply online. If you already have an account for other Secretary of State services, log in with your existing credentials. If you’re new, create an account and activate your account via the email link.

Step 2: Complete the online application

Submit your application online with a $100 non-refundable fee. You’ll receive an automated email with instructions on how to submit your LiveScan fingerprints

After delivering your fingerprint request form and background waiver to the Secretary of State (SoS), allow about 45 days for review.

Step 3: Purchase a surety bond

If you pass the background check, the SoS will email instructions about filing a surety bond. The bond is a form of financial security to protect your customers if you breach any laws or regulations. You can buy your Nevada legal document preparation bond online starting at $150.

Step 4: Receive your Certification of Registration

Once all qualifications are met, you’ll receive a Certificate of Registration by mail. You cannot legally operate until the certificate arrives. Unregistered activity may result in civil or criminal penalties.

Nevada surety bond requirements for legal document preparers vary by type and number of registrants. If you are applying for a solo document preparer registration, you’ll need a $25,000 bond which starts at $200.
