What Are Idaho Alcohol Tax Bonds?

Idaho alcohol tax bonds are surety bonds that ensure businesses comply with state and local licensing regulations and liquor laws. They protect consumers and the state by guaranteeing that alcohol-related companies:

  • Pay all excise taxes, interests, fines and fees owed
  • Follow Idaho Alcohol Beverage Control rules and regulations

The state-required alcohol tax bond is a license requirement for all retailers of beer and wine as well as wine distributors and beer wholesalers.

How Much Do Alcohol Tax Bonds Cost in Idaho?

Wine and beer tax bond amounts must equal three times your average monthly tax payment. New businesses with no tax history will file a $1,000 Idaho alcohol tax bond for their first year.

  • Wine tax bonds cost $12 per $1,000 of coverage, with a $100 minimum.
  • Beer tax bonds also cost $12 per $1,000 of coverage, starting at $100. However, if the bond amount exceeds $25,000 you must apply for a credit-based quote.

Idaho distillers and liquor manufacturers need a $1,000 bond which costs a flat premium of $100 per year. Or, you can pay $250 for a 3-year term and save 25% on each subsequent year.

How Does an Idaho Alcohol Tax Bond Work?

An Idaho alcohol tax bond protects the state and the public by creating a legally-binding contract between three parties:

  1. Principal: The company or individual purchasing the bond
  2. Obligee: The state or local government department requiring the bond
  3. Surety: The provider issuing the alcohol tax bond

If the principal breaks the bond terms and creates damages, the obligee or harmed consumers can file a claim for reimbursement. The surety will investigate and pay out valid claims, then the principal must repay the surety.
