Why do I need an auctioneer bond in Pennsylvania?

The Pennsylvania State Board of Auctioneers Examiners requires all applicants looking to become licensed auctioneers to obtain $5,000 surety bonds. The bond is conditioned on the auctioneer’s adherence to the rules and stipulations of the Pennsylvania Auctioneer and Auction Licensing Act. The bond also provides for the repayment of any financial losses as a result of an auctioneer’s poor professional practices.

Terms of an auctioneer surety bond

Auctioneer bonds are considered continuously effective until canceled. If the surety wishes to terminate this bond, 10 days’ notice prior to cancellation must be given to the Board.

How to become a licensed auctioneer in Pennsylvania

To become an auctioneer in Pennsylvania, every applicant must pass the Auctioneer Licensing Examination. Once the examination is passed, the following must also be completed:

  • Post a $5,000 surety bond
  • Pay $50 application fee
  • Provide a recent Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) from the state police or other state agency that is the official repository for criminal history record information for every state in which you have lived, worked, or completed professional training/studies for the past five years
  • Request an official transcript be sent directly from the college/university to Dasher

There are additional experience/educational requirements auctioneers must meet, which can be done in one of the following ways:

Option 1: Served an apprenticeship as a licensed apprentice auctioneer for a period of at least two years underneath a qualified auctioneer and participated for compensation in at least 30 auctions

  • If applying based on at least a two year apprenticeship, provide employing auctioneer data and a list of the minimum of 30 auctions you conducted over the previous two years.

Option 2: Successfully completed a prescribed course of study in auctioneering of at least 20 credit hours, including two credit hours of practicum or cooperative practical experience, at a school approved by the board.

  • Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC)
  • Reading Area Community College (RACC)
  • Clarion University-Venango Campus.

Option 3: Successfully complete a prescribed course of study at a school approved by the board in auctioneering requiring fewer than 20 credit hours and served as a licensed apprentice auctioneer for a period of at least one year under a qualified sponsor and participated for compensation at least 15 auctions.

  • If applying based on the completion of a prescribed course of study and at least a one year apprenticeship, provide employing auctioneer data and a list of at least 15 auctions
